¿Por qué debemos leer con los niños? Why should we read to children?

FERIA DE LIBROS EN INGLÉS ESTE SÁBADO en el Instituto de 10:30 a 13:30, coincidiendo con el cuentacuentos de CLEVER BEATRICE. Libros de temas y niveles variados a precios muy asequibles. Os queremos animar a los padres e hijos a disfrutar de la lectura en inglés juntos.

We are repeating the Book Fair from Books and More this Saturday from 10:30 to 13:30, coinciding with the storytelling session for CLEVER BEATRICE. There will be a wide variety of topics and levels, at very reasonable prices. We want to encourage parents and children to enjoy reading in English together.

Los días 7 y 19 de mayo, coincidiendo con las clases de Young Learners y el storytelling de mayo, celebraremos una feria de libros en inglés, organizado por Books and More. Habrá todo tipo de libros, de todos los niveles, para toda la familia. ¡Nos vemos allÍ!

On May 7th and 19th, coinciding with our Young Learners classes and the May storytelling sessions, we will be holding a bookfair in of English books, organized by Books and More. We’ll have all kinds of books, at different levels, for the whole family. See you there!

Yesterday at the Institute, for La Noche de los Libros, there was a storytelling session in English, about the book What About Me? Thanks to Ana, our librarian, and Carrie and Trisha, the storytellers, for organizing the event.

Some of our students also talked about their favorite books. They had lots of ideas.

One book we have worked with in Kids’ Club is The Little Mouse, the Red, Ripe Strawberry, and the Big, Hungry Bear, by Don and Audrey Wood. This funny book starts off with “Hello, Little Mouse. What are you doing?” It uses simple language and lovely illustrations to tell the story of a little mouse who tries to hide a red, ripe strawberry from a bear. The students made their own book to show some more ways the mouse could hide the strawberry. Take a look:

For parents interested in learning more about reading with their children, this article appeared in Science Daily last week, talking about what adults should do when reading aloud to children, to increase their awareness of words and their meaning.

Speaking in Tongues: ¡Gracias por venir!

Last night we held a screening of the documentary SPEAKING IN TONGUES, about four students becoming bilingual in public schools in San Francisco. We had an excellent turnout of about 40 people, including parents, school teachers, university professors, and even one of our very own Young Learners students!

Estamos en invierno todavía…¡pero pensando en el verano, claro que sí!

Ya nos están preguntando muchos padres y madres por nuestros planes de verano. Igual que otros años, vamos a ofrecer nuestro campamento en inglés: SUMMER IN THE CITY de nuevo.

Aunque la matrícula empieza en mayo, os adelantamos que estamos planeando un verano muy divertido, lleno de actividades y excursiones organizadas en torno a temas semanales.

Este curso vamos a incluir un grupo para niños y niñas de 5 años que ya han terminado el último curso de infantil y que se están preparando para 1º de primaria.

The Groundhog has Spoken! Six More Weeks of Winter!

Today, February 2nd, is Groundhog day in the United States. Every year on this date, eager observers gather in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and watch via TV and Internet from around the world, to learn the prediction of Phil (the Groundhog).

Legend says that if Phil sees his shadow when he leaves his burrow (hole), then he will be frightened and return to his burrow. This means we will have six more weeks of winter.

However, if Phil does not see his shadow, then spring is just around the corner (nearly here).

This morning, Phil predicted that we will have six more weeks of winter.

The Kids’ Club class made pop-up groundhogs this week, with an activity from enchantedlearning.com.

Nos han comentado muchos alumnos que pasar una temporada en el extranjero entra en sus planes de futuro.

¿Por qué no ir a EEUU este verano…GRATIS?

Nos complace informarles sobre las Becas Benjamin Franklin ofrecidas por la Embajada de Estados Unidos para una estancia de un mes en verano en EEUU para conocer la cultura estadounidense junto a jóvenes norteamericanos y de otras nacionalidades.

En una de las convocatorias anteriores una alumna del programa de Young Learners del IIE fue seleccionada para esta beca. Esperamos en esta ocasión tener la misma suerte.
