On Monday, June 25th we had ANOTHER great show, this time with the Young Learners and Kids’ Club Monday and Wednesday groups.

There were all kinds of great acts: a poetry recital and singalong from Patti’s Kids’ Club group, a funny Readers’ Theater from Alicia’s Kids’ Club class, some funny news stories written by Alisha’s Young Learners 3 class, and a big surprise from Katie’s Young Learners 6 class, who acted out the story “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.”  Everyone enjoyed the kids’ performances, and then we cooled off with some refreshments in the cafeteria.  Thanks to Alicia, Alisha and Katie for all the hard work with the students this year. And kids: HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

End-of-term celebrations at the Institute

On Saturday, June 16th, the Young Learners Saturday classes did a show for their parents and classmates. Young Learners 2 and 4 did “Readers’ Theater” pieces, Young Learners 3 did a newscast with some amazing stories, and Young Learners 6 students acted as greeters and presenters for all the other acts.

Everyone enjoyed the show, and the kids got to show off the English they learned this year with their fantastic teachers: Alicia and Donna, Alisha, Chloe, Chris and Christine.

Alisha’s and Chloe’s classes wrote their own scripts.

After studying Martin Luther King, Jr., and other figures of the civil rights movement in the United States, as well as discussing discrimination and civil rights in Spain, the Young Learner’s 4 Saturday class put their heads together to write their own anti-discrimination fable using words from their vocabulary notebooks. Here is what they presented in a “Readers’ Theater” format for us:

The Possum and the Raccoon: an anti-discrimination fable

One day, in a forest in Georgia, animal friends were talking about the raccoon’s party… all except one. The possum didn’t have a lot of friends because the other animals said that he was very nasty, above all the raccoon.

That morning, the possum was looking for food when he saw a lot of animals with presents.

“Where are you going?” the possum asked the bird.

“We are going to the raccoon’s party. Hurry up! The party is going to start soon,” answered the bird.

The possum thought, ‘Oh, a party could be fun!’, and he followed the animals. All the animals went into the garden, but when it was the possum’s turn, a very big fox stopped him.

“Sorry, you aren’t on the list,” said the fox. Continue Reading End-of-term celebrations at the Institute…

Kids Club travels around the world with Flat Stanley

This spring Kids’ Club students in Patti’s group read Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown. This book tells the story of a boy, Stanley Lambchop, who becomes flat after a bulletin board falls on him in the night. Being flat allows Stanley to have lots of adventures. One fun thing Stanley gets to do is travel to California in an envelope!

There is an international project for children, parents and teachers called The Flat Stanley Project. It allows children to send Flat Stanleys to different parts of the world to learn about new places.

In May Kids’ Club students made their own Flat Stanleys to send to children in schools in Rome, New York and Ohaupo, New Zealand. They also sent pictures of themselves in the Institute, along with a letter and some postcards from Madrid.

Then  we  waited to receive the Flat Stanley that was coming from New Zealand. It was very exciting to get a letter along with some photos and some stickers from the children on the other side of the world.  Rodrigo took the visiting Flat Stanley home for a few days, and we showed him around the Institute. Flat Stanley even got to go to a storytelling session in the library.

Our Flat Stanleys made it back safely from New York and New Zealand, too. Here are some pictures of our Flat Stanleys in the New York School for the Deaf in Rome, New York (type in “Rome, New York.”).

Each child’s Flat Stanley came back from New York with a letter from a child in who had taken him home for a few days. As they were visiting the School for the Deaf, they also brought back a copy of the sign language alphabet, which the  class was excited to learn.

The Flat Stanley from New Zealand also brought back some pictures and notes about his adventures:

We had lots of reading the book Flat Stanley, and then making, sending and receiving Flat Stanleys. Stanley sure is lucky he can travel in an envelope!

Peanut butter and jelly in the garden

In May Alicia’s class learned about  writing instructions, so they decided to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, an American favorite, to practice explaining a recipe.

First they made the sandwiches while the children in Patti’s group watched so they could make sandwiches, too.  Nora said, “This is the first time I’ve ever made my own sandwich!”

Some of the students had more fun making the sandwiches than eating them. Then we learned this song to remember how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
