The Young Learners 1 group celebrated Halloween by making pumpkins and ghosts. They also practiced the famous phrase ‘Trick or Treat’ with each other. We also made skeletons, the following week, in order to talk about the parts of the body. Great work, kids!

Our YL2 class celebrated Halloween by learning all about Halloween house decorations in the United States. We viewed several images of the scariest Halloween house decorations. We learned several new vocabulary words. The students then took large pieces of drawing paper and, with partners, drew their own houses and decorated them to make them the scariest. They labeled the house decorations with the vocabulary they learned in class. The students then presented their drawings to the rest of the group and explained their decorations, providing another opportunity for them to use the new vocabulary.

The students also read a play about bones and body parts.  They split into two groups and rehearsed the play, coming up with their own ideas on how to act it out. I was very impressed with the actions they added to the play and their teamwork. Below are some pictures of the kids reading their play.

Valentine’s day and Candy Conversation Hearts

This Valentine’s Day we were lucky to receive a present of candy conversation hearts from Boston! These candies are typical American Valentine’s day treats. Some people like eating them, but some people don’t think they taste very good. Our students really liked them!

Conversation hearts are also fun to use for decoration. The Kids’ Club students made Valentine cards for their parents, and the YL 4 students used the hearts to write love letters. Who were the love letters for? Only the students know the answer to that! The Young Learners 4 students also matched words and definitions to fix “broken hearts.”

Here are some pictures of the students’ Valentine’s Day messages.

Los alumnos de las las clases 1, 2, 3 y 4 decoraron galletas para la navidad el último día de clase. Se mostraron muy creativos con sus diseños…¡que luego comieron!

Esperamos veros a todos de nuevo en enero. ¡Felices fiestas! ¡Felices vacaciones!

Kids’ Club celebrates Thanksiving

Kids’ Club has done several activities to commemorate Thanksgiving this November.  We prepared  marshmallow Pilgrims’ hats and Native American tepees that children could take home and eat. Tepees were dwellings used by the Native Americans of the Great Plains, so the Pilgrims did not actually see them. The Native Americans where the Pilgrims arrived, the Wompanoag, lived in dome-shaped houses called wetuash (singular wetu).

We also made some origami turkeys and learned some Thanksgiving songs and poems. Some students even wrote poems of their own. In the pictures you can see examples of some cinquain poems the kids wrote. On November 26th, the students performed a Readers’ Theater script and sang a Thanksgiving song for their parents, as well as showing them some of their work. Then the families shared some Thanksgiving snacks.

Thanks to all the students and their families for being with us this year!

Once again, Young Learners and Kids’ Club students got involved in some American Halloween traditions. Some classes, like YL 3 on Tuesday and Saturday, and YL 5/6 on Wednesday, carved pumpkins. Kids’ Club and  YL 3 and YL 4 made popcorn balls, a tasty treat that some Americans eat at Halloween and Christmas. Our popcorn balls were made with candy corn, a special Halloween candy from the U.S. Some students made lollipop ghosts to take home, too.
