Alicia’s group sang three songs from the film version of Charlotte’s Web. The class read the book throughout the term, and finished off with these happy (and fast) songs. It was a wonderful way to end the year. Thank you to all of the parents and students who joined in. See you in October!

Spiders and Insects

Kids’ Club has continued to read, talk and sing about spiders and insects. Here are some pictures of the ants they made out of egg cartons. Everyone loved pretending big ants were crawling up their arms!

They also learned this song: “The Ants Go Marching.”

They changed some of the words for their end-of-year  performance.

It has been a fun year for Kids’ Club and they are looking forward to showing their parents what they have learned this term. On Monday, June 23rd, they will be acting out The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle, and singing The Ants Go Marching and two other songs.

Spiders and Insects

Kids’ Club is still learning about spiders and insects. They have read two more Eric Carle books, The Very Grouchy Ladybug and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They looked at the life cycle of a caterpillar and compared fiction (story) books with non-fiction (information) books.

This Kids’ Club group loves crafts! They made ladybugs with movable wings and played a game where they tried to get as many segments of a caterpillar’s body as possible so they could make the longest caterpillar. After playing the game the students decided to make their own caterpillars to take home.

This term a student from the University of California Irvine, Cynthia Torres, is doing an internship with the International Institute English Program. Cynthia is helping out in Kids’ Club and Young Learners 4, and will be with us for part of Summer in the City, our Urban Camp in the month of July.  Cynthia is majoring in English and Spanish, with a minor in Education.

The youngest Kids’ Club group is working on a unit about Insects and Spiders. They listened to the book The Very Busy Spider, by Eric Carle, and learned this song: Shoo Fly, Don’t Bother Me!

Story:

Song:

Miss Nina’s music videos are great for learning English, and for just having fun!

This week the group learned another traditional American song: There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. Here is a fun video of the song from The Muppet Show, which some parents and teachers may remember:

The kids made this craft to remember the song: http://www.kizclub.com/storypatterns/swallowed%28C%29.pdf

And everybody knows this famous spider song: The Itsy Bitsy Spider

Both books, The Very Busy Spider and There was an Old Lady, are available in our Library.

Kids’ Club Practice Phonics of Short Vowels

Here are links to the songs the kids used last trimester to practice phonics of the short vowels. It would be a fantastic idea to review the songs and sing along with them to practice, not only for pronunciation but for the vocabulary.

Pre-Easter Celebration!

61 2 3easter

Kids’ Club had a fun, pre-Easter celebration in the garden.  They dyed Easter eggs, which most American school children
do at this time every year. Then they made bunny-ear bags to take their eggs home.  After that, they decorated cupcakes to look like spring chicks. They used yellow icing for the face and “fluff,” and jellybeans and other candies for the eyes and beak. Finally, they had an American-style Easter egg hunt in the garden! Here are some pictures of the kids at work and at play.

KC In Love with Matilda

The Kids Club this Fall trimester focused on the book Matilda by Roald Dahl.  Dahl is best known for his book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which has had two movie versions made.   Matilda has also been made into a great movie. I was pleasantly surprised at how much the kids enjoyed reading the book.  We read it together as a class, taking time to go over new vocabulary. The kids loved answering each other’s vocabulary questions. We also took time to do reader’s responses, and the students used their artistic skills to draw their versions of an illustration to a chapter.  We didn’t get a chance to complete the whole book, but read enough so that all the students were enthusiastic enough to read it on their own.

Here are some more books by Roald Dahl that your kids might enjoy: Fantastic Mr. FoxJames and the Giant Peach, and The BFG.  The children might also enjoy the official Dahl website, which has more information on his books and even some games that are related to his works.

Kid’s Club Volcanoes

As part of the Non Fiction unit students made some experiments.  One of those experiments was a volcano.  We first learned about volcanoes and what natural forces create them.  We made a beautiful volcano craft and finally we made our real life like volcanoes out of clay.  We put poured bicarbonate and vinegar inside and wham they exploded. Soon you can check out the video to see the kids reactions.

Reading and Writing about Non-Fiction

July 3, 2013 at 6:36 pm | Posted in Non Fiction Unit | 1 Comment

Kid’s Club students learned about Non-fiction.  They explored the differences between fiction story books and non-fiction books.  Students learned that non-fiction books sometimes use labels to point out information about a picture or diagram. Kids learned how to respond to non fiction books and to tap into their background knowledge to make a connections to their new learning. They also wrote some news articles about non fiction subjects they were studying.  See the posts on their experiments with liquids and a volcano.
