Young Learners 4: How to Train Your Dragon

The Tuesday-Thursday group of Young Learners 4 has been doing advanced vocabulary study through a segment of one of the books from the series ‘How to Train Your Dragon’. There is also a series of movies which is loosely based on the book, and the third is coming out in June (it would be a great follow-up of the segments they’ve done to go see the movie when it comes out!). The students used their artistic ability and creative imagination to create the flashcards you see here, later used in games for vocabulary memorization.ImageImageImage

Creative Family Books

Young Learners 5 members took out their creative pens and wrote about their families. They wrote one entry per family member, and each entry had a word limit that corresponded to the age of that particular family member. After completing their descriptions, the young leaners made colorful books to fill with their writing. Image

Valentine’s day and Candy Conversation Hearts

This Valentine’s Day we were lucky to receive a present of candy conversation hearts from Boston! These candies are typical American Valentine’s day treats. Some people like eating them, but some people don’t think they taste very good. Our students really liked them!

Conversation hearts are also fun to use for decoration. The Kids’ Club students made Valentine cards for their parents, and the YL 4 students used the hearts to write love letters. Who were the love letters for? Only the students know the answer to that! The Young Learners 4 students also matched words and definitions to fix “broken hearts.”

Here are some pictures of the students’ Valentine’s Day messages.

Once again, Young Learners and Kids’ Club students got involved in some American Halloween traditions. Some classes, like YL 3 on Tuesday and Saturday, and YL 5/6 on Wednesday, carved pumpkins. Kids’ Club and  YL 3 and YL 4 made popcorn balls, a tasty treat that some Americans eat at Halloween and Christmas. Our popcorn balls were made with candy corn, a special Halloween candy from the U.S. Some students made lollipop ghosts to take home, too.

End-of-term celebrations at the Institute

On Saturday, June 16th, the Young Learners Saturday classes did a show for their parents and classmates. Young Learners 2 and 4 did “Readers’ Theater” pieces, Young Learners 3 did a newscast with some amazing stories, and Young Learners 6 students acted as greeters and presenters for all the other acts.

Everyone enjoyed the show, and the kids got to show off the English they learned this year with their fantastic teachers: Alicia and Donna, Alisha, Chloe, Chris and Christine.

Alisha’s and Chloe’s classes wrote their own scripts.

After studying Martin Luther King, Jr., and other figures of the civil rights movement in the United States, as well as discussing discrimination and civil rights in Spain, the Young Learner’s 4 Saturday class put their heads together to write their own anti-discrimination fable using words from their vocabulary notebooks. Here is what they presented in a “Readers’ Theater” format for us:

The Possum and the Raccoon: an anti-discrimination fable

One day, in a forest in Georgia, animal friends were talking about the raccoon’s party… all except one. The possum didn’t have a lot of friends because the other animals said that he was very nasty, above all the raccoon.

That morning, the possum was looking for food when he saw a lot of animals with presents.

“Where are you going?” the possum asked the bird.

“We are going to the raccoon’s party. Hurry up! The party is going to start soon,” answered the bird.

The possum thought, ‘Oh, a party could be fun!’, and he followed the animals. All the animals went into the garden, but when it was the possum’s turn, a very big fox stopped him.

“Sorry, you aren’t on the list,” said the fox. Continue Reading End-of-term celebrations at the Institute…
