Kids’ Club finishes off a great year
June 30, 2014 at 4:55 pm | Posted in Kids Club, Parents | Leave a commentKids’ Club finished the term with a performance for their parents. Patti’s class sang three songs and performed a play of The Very Busy Spider.
Alicia’s group sang three songs from the film version of Charlotte’s Web. The class read the book throughout the term, and finished off with these happy (and fast) songs. It was a wonderful way to end the year. Thank you to all of the parents and students who joined in. See you in October!

Spiders and Insects
June 17, 2014 at 1:46 pm | Posted in Kids Club, Uncategorized | Leave a commentKids’ Club has continued to read, talk and sing about spiders and insects. Here are some pictures of the ants they made out of egg cartons. Everyone loved pretending big ants were crawling up their arms!
They also learned this song: “The Ants Go Marching.”
They changed some of the words for their end-of-year performance.
It has been a fun year for Kids’ Club and they are looking forward to showing their parents what they have learned this term. On Monday, June 23rd, they will be acting out The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle, and singing The Ants Go Marching and two other songs.

Spiders and Insects
May 30, 2014 at 5:52 pm | Posted in Kids Club, Uncategorized | Leave a commentKids’ Club is still learning about spiders and insects. They have read two more Eric Carle books, The Very Grouchy Ladybug and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They looked at the life cycle of a caterpillar and compared fiction (story) books with non-fiction (information) books.
This Kids’ Club group loves crafts! They made ladybugs with movable wings and played a game where they tried to get as many segments of a caterpillar’s body as possible so they could make the longest caterpillar. After playing the game the students decided to make their own caterpillars to take home.
This term a student from the University of California Irvine, Cynthia Torres, is doing an internship with the International Institute English Program. Cynthia is helping out in Kids’ Club and Young Learners 4, and will be with us for part of Summer in the City, our Urban Camp in the month of July. Cynthia is majoring in English and Spanish, with a minor in Education.
Here are some pictures of the students and Cynthia at work:

Your Neighborhood Part II
May 30, 2014 at 11:49 am | Posted in Young Learners 3 | Leave a commentRemember when the YL 3 members sent Kate Sullivan, author of “On Linden Square,” drawings of their own neighborhoods? She responded! Not only did she send them pictures of her artwork, personalized with notes commenting on the Young Learners’ drawings, but she also mentioned them on her blog which you can see here. Thank you Kate Sullivan for being a great pen pal!
Have You Ever Tried Sushi?
May 24, 2014 at 2:59 pm | Posted in Uncategorized, Young Learners 3 | Leave a commentToday the YL 3 Saturday group practiced the present perfect tense with questions like, “have you ever tried sushi before?” They also learned why raw fish is much softer than other raw meats such as chicken or beef. In the ocean fish swim and feel the effects of gravity less than land animals because of their buoyancy. Their muscles do not have to work as hard as a cow’s, for example, to move around, and so their muscles do not grow to be as dense! With this theme, the YL 3 members made their own versions of sushi and an accompanying menu.
